Distraction Free Schools - August 1st Update

Posted Date: 8/01/25 (11:00 AM)

Good morning, high school families,

We hope that you are having a wonderful summer, and we look forward to welcoming students back to school on September 2nd. On May 23rd, Dr. Siracuse emailed our school community about the new distraction free schools law that will be going into effect at the start of the 2025-2026 school year.

In support of our commitment to academic excellence, personal responsibility, and a focused school environment, Wayne High School will implement new cellphone and personal internet-enabled device procedures beginning with the 2025–2026 school year.

Our procedures align with New York State Education Law 2803 and Board of Education Policy 7316, which mandate that schools prohibit the use of non-school owned internet-enabled personal devices (such as smartphones, smartwatches, tablets, or other similar technology) during the instructional day—except in specific, approved circumstances.

Effective September 2, 2025, students will be required to store their personal electronic devices in their assigned lockers from 7:40AM until the end of the school day, 2:22PM. Use of cellphones or other personal internet-enabled devices will not be permitted during class periods, passing time, lunch, academic workshops, or in common areas. Understanding that this is a significant change for students and families, over the next month, we will continue to send updates with additional details.

All students at Wayne High School are issued a school-managed Chromebook, which is equipped with the tools and applications needed for academic work—including access to digital textbooks, communication with teachers, and assignment platforms. Therefore, cellphones and other internet-enabled personal devices will not be necessary during the instructional day and are expected to remain secured in lockers and turned to silent mode.

Exceptions to the policy include:

  • Medically necessary devices (e.g., insulin monitors)
  • Translation tools for English Language Learners

If you need to contact your child during the school day, please call the Wayne High School Main Office at (315) 524-1050 or the Attendance Office at (315) 524-1060.

We thank you for your continued partnership as we work to foster a school environment that is free from unnecessary digital distractions—one that encourages students to be present, connected, and fully engaged in their learning and growth as proud members of the Wayne Eagles community.

Sincerely,

Dr. Jason Berger, Principal
Ms. Jackie Senecal, Assistant Principal
Mr. Ryan Teeter, Assistant Principal
