Wayne Central High School

Internship

Internship

  • The Internship Program will provide students exposure to a career field of interest and provide them a unique and personalized experience that they cannot receive in a typical classroom environment. Students will learn about and begin to develop skills and competencies they will need in order to be successful in the workplace.

  • The Internship Program requires all students to complete a 40 hour, unpaid internship experience. Students may complete the experience in a career field of their choice, allowing them to focus on and learn about a career in which they may be interested in pursuing after high school. This opportunity allows students to apply skills and knowledge they have learned in school to real world situations and provides experiences that cannot be created in the classroom.

    • Students will be knowledgeable about the world of work, explore career options, and relate personal skills, aptitudes, and abilities to future career decisions;
    • Students will demonstrate how academic knowledge and skills are applied in the workplace;
    • Students will demonstrate the foundation skills and competencies essential for success in the workplace.
  • There is a mandatory seminar that is held throughout the school day and after school (or held virtually when Covid protocols are in place). If for some reason, a student is unable to attend a seminar, arrangements need to be made with the internship coordinator to make up the missed seminar. Students must attend all seminars before beginning their internship hours.

    There are three sessions of internship each year: fall semester (beginning in October), spring semester (beginning in February), and summer semester (beginning in May). Students will choose the semester in which they wish to enroll during the spring of their sophomore year.

  • Internship is graded as a pass/fail for the course. All work must meet a standard determined by the instructor. If assignments do not meet the minimum standard, they will need to be corrected and resubmitted. Upon completion of hours and all internship paperwork, students will receive ½ credit.

    • Attend seminars with their internship coordinator

    • Must complete 40 hours at a worksite (schedule to be determined by mentor, student, and coordinator)

    • Maintain timesheets to verify completion of hours
    • Complete journal entries to reflect on their experiences
    • Complete a self-evaluation at the conclusion of internship hours
    • Assist students in establishing goals and objectives of the internship
    • Keep in contact with the internship coordinator as needed
    • Provide exposure to the career field for the student
    • Share expertise in the field with the student
